Republican Montana Sen. Steve Daines sent a letter Monday to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo calling for an investigation into China’s role in the coronavirus outbreak, as the deadly disease continues to spread throughout the U.S.

“As you are well aware, China’s initial response to reports of an atypical pneumonia being detected by medical personnel in Hubei province in late 2019 were ham-fisted with government officials hiding cases, punishing doctors who dared to speak-up, and resulted in delays that worsened the impact of COVID-19 on public health and the economies of countries around the world,” Daines wrote in the letter.

Montana Republican Sen. Steve Daines, in a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Monday, pushed for a coordinated international investigation of China’s apparent systematic cover-up of COVID-19, writing it’s important to consider “appropriate punitive actions necessary to hold China accountable.”

The source of the “real harm to our economy”, Daines wrote to Pompeo, needs to be made clear so that Americans can “truly understand why they are making the sacrifices that they are.”

US Senator Steve Daines announced on March 16 that Montana has received $4.5 million in funds from the Center for Disease Control (CDC). The funds will be used in response to the novel coronavirus outbreak in Montana.

“This critical funding helps protect Montanans and ensures that our communities have the resources necessary to handle the coronavirus outbreak,” Daines said.

But Daines deserves some special credit this week. He has parlayed his relationship with President Trump into a stunning win for the fund, which has provided more than $400 million in projects in Montana.

As recently as last month, Trump had proposed cutting funding for the program. Now, after a meeting with Daines and Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, the President has tweeted support for full permanent funding for LWCF.

Republican Sen. Steve Daines went to Conrad on Friday to officially file to serve a second term as to the U.S. Senate seat, saying it was near an area where his relatives planted roots in Montana.

Daines, accompanied by his wife, Cindy, filed for re-election from his cellphone inside the Home Café. Minutes after filing, Daines was endorsed by President Donald Trump via Twitter.
