KGVO: Daines Call to Trump Stops Anaconda Job Corps Center Closure

In a hastily called press conference on Monday, Montana Senator Steve Daines relayed the news that his personal call to President Donald Trump saved the Anaconda Job Corps Center from closing.

“When the announcement came out 10 days ago that the Anaconda Job Corps would be closing, we got to work to make sure that wouldn’t happen,” said Daines. “I spoke to (Agriculture) Secretary Perdue and (Labor) Secretary Acosta several times but this Saturday, just three days ago, I decided to elevate this to the very top, so I called President Trump, and because of that call, I wanted to share the news with you that President Trump has decided to overrule the decision to close the Anaconda Job Corps Center, so it will remain open, and it will also remain a Civilian Conservation Corps site.”

Missoula Current: Daines’ call convinces Trump to keep Anaconda Job Corps site open

Sen. Steve Daines on Monday said a phone call to President Donald Trump over the weekend convinced the commander-in-chief to keep the Anaconda Job Corps Civilian Conservation Center open, saying it plays an important role in southwest Montana.

Daines told reporters during a media call that he phoned Trump on Saturday to discuss the site’s significance to the Montana economy and its top ranking within the Civilian Conservation Corps.

“The president gratefully overruled the decision made by Secretary (Alex) Acosta,” Daines said. “This is about jobs. The decision would have been devastating, and I’m glad the president listened to the argument I made to him and decided to keep the site open.”

Billings Gazette: Daines, Gianforte support refined coal tax credit with Colstrip in mind

Montana’s congressional Republicans are backing a tax break on refined coal, in hopes of sparking investment in Colstrip Power Plant.

Sen. Steve Daines and Rep. Greg Gianforte are among several lawmakers calling for an extension of a tax credit for “refined coal,” meaning coal that’s been screened or pre-treated to lower pollutants when burned. The two Republicans mentioned Colstrip specifically Thursday in an email calling for a renewal of the tax credit.

“Colstrip and energy jobs are a critical part of our Montana way of life,” Daines said. “This bill will protect good-paying energy jobs, support refined coal production, and reduce emissions. This is a win for Montana, this is a win for the environment, and this is a win for American energy dominance.”

KTVQ: Daines calls for greater transparency on prescription-drug pricing

More Americans struggle with paying for prescription drugs, and many times there’s someone in between the drug company and the consumer who negotiates the price.

U.S. Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont., said Monday he’s introduced a bill to create transparency around what that “middle man” is doing.

That includes looking into the effects of company consolidation on drug pricing.

As many companies merge, it creates less competition and allows for an increase in drug prices, according to Daines.
